NSW BESS4 Is Here: What It Means for Businesses
NSW’s new BESS4 incentive is making commercial battery storage more accessible. From 1 September 2026, eligible businesses can take advantage of upfront discounts to store more of their solar energy and better manage electricity costs. For Fox ESS partners, the scheme creates a timely opportunity to deliver tailored commercial storage solutions.
Understanding the BESS4 Opportunity
BESS4, part of the NSW Peak Demand Reduction Scheme, applies to eligible non residential, non data centre sites installing batteries with more than 20 kWh and no more than 200 kWh of usable capacity. Qualifying installations generate Peak Reduction Certificates, or PRCs, which can be converted into an upfront discount through an Accredited Certificate Provider.
The NSW Government estimates discounts of approximately 20 to 30 percent for battery only installations and 30 to 40 percent when sufficient new or additional solar is installed. Actual savings depend on system design, certificate values and project eligibility.
Fox ESS Configurations to Maximise Incentive Value
BESS4 can be accessed through eligible Fox ESS H3 Smart, H3 Pro, or H3 Plus hybrid inverters paired with different CQ7 battery capacities.
| System Size | Recommended Configuration | Usable Capacity |
Around 50 kWh | H3 Smart/Pro 15 kW + CQ7 L8 | 50.112 kWh |
| Around 100 kWh | H3 Pro 29.9 kW + CQ7 L7 and L8 | 93.96 kWh |
| Around 200 kWh | H3 Plus 50 kW + CQ7 L10 and L11 (Power Beast) | 194.18 kWh |
The approximately 194 kWh configuration approaches BESS4’s 200 kWh capacity ceiling, making it relevant for projects with substantial storage requirements. However, the maximum available incentive is not determined by battery capacity alone. Inverter output, qualifying solar capacity and the scheme’s certificate calculation rules must also be considered.
Where sufficient new or additional solar is installed, projects may qualify for the higher incentive level. Battery only installations may also be eligible, allowing businesses to assess storage independently of a new solar installation.
Maximising the Available Incentive
The most effective approach begins with an assessment of electricity consumption, existing solar generation, peak demand and available installation space. Businesses, project managers, EPCs and installation partners can then work with an Accredited Certificate Provider to select an appropriately sized Fox ESS configuration and calculate the potential PRC value.
Equipment eligibility, network approvals, planning requirements and installation conditions should be confirmed before the project proceeds. Final quotations should clearly identify the incentive and customer contribution, including the minimum payment of $5,000 per implementation.
Eligible smaller systems may also qualify for Federal battery support, subject to separate capacity limits and program conditions. Any combined incentive should be confirmed before finalising the system design.
BESS4 provides an opportunity to reduce upfront storage costs while improving solar self consumption and electricity management. By matching the appropriate Fox ESS configuration to each project’s energy requirements, businesses can capture the available incentive while maintaining a practical and effective storage solution.
