Cheaper Home Batteries Rebate: What Changes on 1 May 2026 — and How Homeowners Can Maximise Their Savings
Australia’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program has rapidly become one of the country’s most impactful clean-energy initiatives. According to the Clean Energy Council, more than 183,0001 storage batteries were purchased since the rebate launched and until end of 2025. This rapid uptake has strengthened grid resilience, reduced household energy bills, and demonstrated how quickly Australians are embracing smarter, more efficient energy technologies.
Because of this overwhelming success, the Australian Government announced on 13 December 2025 that it would expand the program from the original $2.3 billion to an estimated $7.2 billion over the next four years. This expansion is expected to support more than 2 million households installing a battery by 2030, delivering around 40 gigawatt-hours of additional storage capacity2 nationwide.
To put it in perspective, a typical Australian home uses up to 20 kWh per day. Forty gigawatt-hours of storage (40 GWh) could theoretically power 2 million homes for a day, or around 200,000 homes for a full day. This is exactly the kind of peak-shaving capacity Australia needs as electrification accelerates.
To ensure the rebate remains accessible to as many Australians as possible, a new tiered structure will take effect on 1 May 2026.
What’s Changing on 1 May 2026?
The Government has confirmed a tiered Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) structure for home batteries. Instead of a single flat rate per kWh, the rebate will scale depending on the size of the system.
✔ Official STC Tiering (From 1 May 2026)
0–14 kWh: 100% of the current STC factor
14–28 kWh: 60% of the STC factor
28–50 kWh: 15% of the STC factor
This structure ensures:
Smaller systems remain highly affordable
Medium systems continue to receive strong support
Larger systems still benefit, but in a way that keeps the program sustainable
How to Maximise Your Rebate
1. If you need a large battery, install before 1 May 2026
Under the current rules, all kWh receive the same STC value up to 50kWh systems.
If you’re considering a system above ~28 kWh, installing before May 1 can deliver significantly higher upfront savings.
2. After 1 May: Aim for the 14–28 kWh “value band”
The new structure still provides strong support for medium-sized batteries.
For most households, the best value per dollar will sit between 14 and 28 kWh.
Here’s how Fox ESS systems can be configured to align with the new tiers:
Fox ESS System Examples Under the New Rebate Structure:
EQ4800 (High-Voltage Modular System)
4.66 kWh per module
Stack up to 9 modules today for ~42 kWh of usable capacity
From 1 May 2026:
• A highly optimised configuration is 6 modules (~28 kWh of usable capacity)
• This places you at the top of the 60% tier, maximising rebate value while still delivering substantial storage capacity.
CQ6 (High-Voltage Modular System)
5.99 kWh per module
Stack up to 7 modules (single-phase) for ~42 kWh or 8 modules (three-phase) for ~48 kWh of usable capacity today
From 1 May 2026:
• A highly optimised configuration is 4 to 5 modules (~24 to ~30 kWh of usable capacity)
Why does the value of Storage Batteries Increase Again on 1 July 2026?
From 1 July 2026, households will gain access to three hours of free electricity each day3 under the national energy-relief initiative.
This creates a powerful daily savings cycle:
Charge your battery for free over the 3hr period
Use that energy during peak-price periods
Or export through compatible VPPs such as Amber or Origin Loop to earn bill credits
This effectively transforms a home battery into a daily optimisation asset, not just a backup system.
Pairing this with a right-sized Fox ESS system means:
Lower running costs
Faster payback
Higher VPP earnings potential
Final Thoughts
With a $7.2 billion investment, a clear tiered structure, and a program running through to 2030, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program remains one of the most generous and forward-looking energy incentives in Australia.
By understanding the May 1 changes and sizing your system strategically, you can secure excellent value today — and position your home to take full advantage of free electricity from mid-2026.
Fox ESS systems offer the flexibility and performance needed to make the most of this opportunity. Our team and installer partners are ready to help you choose the configuration that best fits your home and energy goals.
